Gran Sasso - Laga National Park |
|
The Gran Sasso-Laga Park is one of the most important and wide Italian parks and spread over five provinces: L’Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, Ascoli Piceno and Rieti. Inside its area we can find the Corno Grande Peak which is the highest peak in the Appenines: metres 2914. The western side has a Tibetan aspect with the best table lands, essential shapes which come from erosion of glaciers, and prairies. The best example of this special landscape is Campo Imperatore. In both sides steep slopes, pyramidal needles characterise the high altitudes where we find the only glacier in the southern Appenines and European Continent. The Gran Sasso has a definitely Alpine shape with important peaks and many high altitude routes. You can see the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas and part of Central Italy from there. As they are rich of woods and streams, of falls and little lakes at the borders among Abruzzo, Marche and Lazio, the Laga mountains have a sweet and undulating aspect. The Laga mountains are really different from the other mountains of the Abruzzese Appenines especially for the structure formed by sandy rocks full of streams alternating with splendid fir-woods, beech woods and the rare birch woods. The whole area of the park is characterised by a lot of small villages of Medieval origin, often perfectly preserved in their ancient structures. Among them we can quote: Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Rocca Calascio, Castel del Monte, Castevecchjio calvisio, Castelli and Civitella del Tronto. The characteristic trait of the Gran Sasso and Laga is the richness of historic memories especially referred to the pastoral civilization which has characterised the culture and the economy of the area.
