It is considered one of the most prestigious in Europe. To the 50.000 hectares of the park we have to add 80.000 hectares of the external protection belt.

In the park there are 18 towns and villages. From each of them marked paths lead visitors towards 150 ecotourist routes linked among themselves by a web of shelters, natural museums and structures which will certainly satisfy the most exigent visitors who can count on the experience of mountain guides and other experts.

 The most famous routes lead to the Camosciara, to the val Fondillo, to the Cicerana, to the Marsicano mountain. Huge beech groves spread out all over the park. Glades or panoramic views are scattered in the groves. They can be seen from the tops of the park like Monte Petroso, the mount. Marsicano, the mount. Grecao and Meta.

 A lot of mountains in the park are above 2000 metres, surrounded by  wooded slopes. In the park 2000 kinds of superior plants, 60 species of mammals ( among these a hundred bears ), 230 species of birds and 40 species of reptiles amphibians and fish.

 The park is worth visiting in any season because of its definitely mountain climate. All the tops are covered with the snow and cross-country skiing can be practised. While in Spring and in Summer, trekking and mountain cycling find their paradise in the park.

 The park comprises historic towns and villages interesting from the point of view of art and tourism. Among these must be mentioned: Pescasseroli, Scanno, Opi, Civitella Alfedena and Villetta Barrea.

Sheep-breeding and crafts are the bearing columns of the Abruzzo traditions which can still be observed in the above mentioned towns.
